CHARACTER FEATURE+ GIVEAWAY: Deer in Headlights by Staci Hart

Hi guys! You might not know this but I love the Good Gods series. Today you’ll meet one of my favorite characters from Deer in Headlights (#1 Good Gods series). Here’s Lex, an artist and poet with a guarded heart.

apolloLex in under 100:

An artist and poet who works at a book shop. She’s never been able to fall in love, even though she’s had one boyfriend after another since she turned sixteen. Lex is afraid of love because she doesn’t want to get hurt, but when she meets Dean, she almost doesn’t have a choice. Her best friend, Kara, is her sounding board and a constant in her life, and someone who she couldn’t live without.

Profile:

Age: 26
Height: 5’4”
Hair: long, dark brown
Eyes: blue-green

Quotes:

“Seriously, the longest I think I’ve gone between guys is two weeks, and I cried the entire time that I would be alone forever. How is it possible that I’ve never been in love?”

***

She felt spellbound, like she’d been hypnotized. Like Mina and Dracula, as if he’d somehow infected her, and logic and reason no longer applied. Ultimately, she didn’t get it, and was torn because even though she knew she should stay away, she was equally fascinated, dreading and anticipating every chance she had to see him.lex-dream

***

They’d only spoken a few times, but she watched him during band practice like a stalker. Dean had all the makings of a man-sized Venus Flytrap. Everything about him called to her, and every other woman in a fifty-foot radius, but she knew that if she got close she would get eaten. Hopefully eaten in the sexy way, but she figured more likely it would be in the way that she would experience a slow and painful death via metaphorical stomach acid.

She’d dodged a bullet, she told herself, over and over, but it hurt like she had taken it in the heart.

Aphrodite never loses, not when it comes to love.

Immortality has its perks and its downsides. Boredom, for one, is unavoidable, but instead of playing parcheesi, the gods devised a game that uses humans as pawns. Remember Shakespeare? That was Apollo. Bonnie and Clyde? Aphrodite versus Ares.

Aphrodite is on deck once again, and she’ll defend her domain of love as she works to get the humans together before the clock runs out, while her opponent tries to keep them apart.

Game one is against Apollo, and Aphrodite knows she has her work cut out for her when he chooses Dean, a brooding rock star man-whore who believes women can’t be trusted. Aphrodite decides on Lex, a perfect match for Dean, even though her heart is guarded, locked away tight. She’d never let anyone in. Not ever. Of course, she hasn’t met Dean.

But there’s always more at stake than just the game when you’ve lived for thousands of years. The Olympians are the original dysfunctional family, surviving eons of love and lust, betrayal and lies, as friends and enemies, through feuds and wars. From Ares, the douchebag, who’s forever trying to start a fight and get Aphrodite into bed, to Persephone, her best friend, who she can always count on for a healthy helping of bacon on a bad day, the gods will take you on a lighthearted trip as they mess with humans, laugh and fight, lose love and gain power.

Author Bio

Staci Hart

Staci has been a lot of things up to this point in her life — a graphic designer, an entrepreneur, a seamstress, a clothing and handbag designer, a waitress. Can’t forget that. She’s also been a mom; she has three little girls who are sure to grow up to break a number of hearts. She’s been a wife; even though she’s certainly not the cleanest, or the best cook. She’s also super, duper fun at a party, especially if she’s been drinking whiskey. Her favorite word starts with f, ends with k, and there a uc in there. Just saying. From roots in Houston, to a seven year stint in Southern California, Staci and her family ended up settling somewhere in between and equally north, in Denver. They are new enough that snow is still magical. When she’s not writing, she’s sleeping, cleaning, or designing graphics. But let’s be honest, she’s mostly writing.

How do the Greek gods kill time? Because they’re always bored. It’s an unavoidable downside of being alive for thousands of years. So, they play games. Games with human players. Remember Shakespeare? Yeah, that was Apollo. Bonnie and Clyde? Aphrodite vs Ares.

It’s Aphrodite’s turn once again in the rounds of competitions, and she’ll defend her domain: Love. She hasn’t lost a competition on her turf in over three millennia, and she’s not about to start now. Apollo is her first competitor, and he’s on a mission to win. If he wins, he’ll get a token; a favor that Aphrodite must fulfill. And with that favor, he’ll finally get the one woman he’s never been able to have.

Aphrodite and Apollo will choose their human players, and if Aphrodite can’t get them together before the clock runs out, Apollo will get his way. And she couldn’t have that.

Lex and Dean are perfect for each other. They just don’t know it yet.

Dean is a perpetual bachelor, and a man-whore. A brooding, gorgeous, rock star man-whore. Lex always has a boyfriend, but she’s never let anyone in enough to let herself go. Not really. Not ever. Aphrodite has her work cut out for her, but if she can’t make it work, no one can.

But she has more at stake than just Lex and Dean. Apollo killed her mortal love, and that beef has been dragging on for thousands of years. Ares, the douchebag, is forever trying to start a fight, and get Aphrodite into bed. And Persephone, her best friend, is the one person she can confide in, laugh with, and always count on for a healthy helping of bacon when she’s having a bad day.

Follow the gods as they fight, laugh, cry, lose love, and gain power. Making a mess with humans has never been so fun.

mythoughts

You should know by now that I would read any book that is related to Greek Mythology so I was really excited to read this one.

The gods of Olympus are always bored so they made this particular game where two deities will go head-to-head in a game and the humans will act as their pawns. This time it’s Aphrodite versus Apollo. Aphrodite will make two humans fall in love with each other and Apollo will do everything to keep them apart. And for Apollo, winning could mean being reunited by the love of his life.

I am no stranger to modernized Greek mythology, but this is kind of new to me since this is the first time I’ve read a modernized Greek myth book with a mature content. It works, though. The combination of Greek deities and steamy romance is great! And I like how the Greek deities are just like us humans, they fall in love, they make mistakes, they learn things they aren’t aware before. I think this is one of the reasons why tales of Greek deities are widely incorporated in contemporary fiction.

The story of Lex and Dean was full of chemistry. Although I gotta admit my first of Dean is that he’s a jerk for sleeping with his band mate’s girl. But hey, everyone can change for the better, right? But what I love the most was the competition of Apollo and Aphrodite. My heart aches for Apollo because he has too much to lose if he didn’t win this competition and he’s been in grief for such a long time. Yet I knew he didn’t stand a chance against Aphrodite. Love conquers all, after all.

“He was funny, smart, charming…and a monumental slut. Dean had all the makings of a man-sized Venus Flytrap. ”

Still, I love the way the story ended, no cliff hangers, just good ol` happily ever after.

I finished this book within a day. I just couldn’t put it down. Good thing the second book to the series is out now and I bet it’s as good as the first one.
